I was having a conversation with my grandfather whom I am quite close with. I mentioned my New Years resolutions about wanting to get out of my little bubble and change my life a bit. He’s quite old fashioned and is a firm believer that if something isn’t broken why fix it. He’s very stuck on his routines and doesn’t like things to be any different than they are.
I feel that change is good if it is going to improve things. I think putting myself out there to be challenges and experience new adventures and try new things is a good thing to do. He disagrees. While I appreciate his honestly and his opinions, I did explain that I am one to go for change.
My question to my follows is, do you believe change to be good or do you prefer to stay in the same routine? There’s no right or wrong answer of course and no judgments. I’m curious to see other’s opinions.
It’s how you look at it.

I’m definitely for change if I feel the need to but some things I’ve been doing for years I wouldn’t want to change

That is completely fine. I’m not against routine and totally understand that it works for some people. It worked for me for 5 years. But I’m ready for some change. My life will still be a little routine because of my kids, but I’m trying to change things up a little bit to make me get out of my shell and challenge myself.

Routines are helpful but shaking things up and embracing change is the only way we can hope to grow and change for the better. Mostly do what lights your fire, what brings you happiness!

Exactly! I’m not against routine. I just don’t prefer it.

Static, things often gets poisoned or more appropriately loses its color whenever the constant flow stops. So change is like being dynamic. Being in the same routine helps us to dig deeper into the comfortable pillows, but we miss out what is there in the outside life, which in fact can be good and bad,but it teaches us lot of life lessons and sometimes help us discover ourselves in a new light. So for me, I would accept a little change, any day over the same routine.

I’m hoping to find new things about myself and maybe find new interests. I’ve been comfortable within my routines for too long now and am ready for some changes!!!

I think many, including myself, love routine because it’s comfortable and safe. When I enter a classroom, I gravitate towards people I already know, when I enter the library I sit where I always do. When I go shopping, I always go to the same store and buy the same things. This is just how it works for me. Anyways, change is good. You discover new things, you discover new things about yourself, you take risks, etc.. To better oneself, I think change will always be in the equation. I think too much routine keeps one in a bubble and though it’s comfortable, it hinders other possibilities. Still, I would never take away my routine but I can try more change here and there. 😀

My dad is much into his routines. I lived with him for 21 years and even now 4 years later I always know what he’s doing because nothing has changed. He seems happy with it so I leave him alone. My grandpa also likes routine as I mentioned. I see nothing wrong with it. I just prefer to try new things. I have allowed myself to get too comfortable in my own little world. To the point where I’m actually kind of bored. So change is very welcoming.

I believe change has to happen in order to become the best version of ourselves. Becoming our best selves is an ongoing process, We can’t beat ourselves up over not being able to change some of the things we would like to though. I am reading a book right now called “Unfu*k Yourself”. The book discusses things we are willing and unwilling to change. It’s okay to be pre-contemplative and contemplative about the circumstances that are hard to change. Eventually, when we are ready, we will find the strength we need to change them. May peace be with you on your journey!

I think there can be a lot of good in change to try to be the best you can be, but aiming for change just for the sake of change may reflect an underlying issue that would be best addressed directly.
